Teacher Lesson Return to "My First Love: Too Much, Too Soon"
My First Love: Too Much, Too Soon
horizontal rule

• Should the anonymous writer, aged 13 or 14, have sex with her boyfriend of one year? She says she’s falling in love with him but what if she gets pregnant? What if Roger deserts her afterward? What is she feels used and abused afterwards? Is 13 or 14 too young to even be making those kinds of decisions?

• Is Roger pressuring her into doing something she really doesn’t want to do? (She certainly doesn’t seem swept away by any great passion). Why would she do something so important, so personal, if she wasn’t clear about her feelings? How does someone at that age (or any age) make that decision?

• What do your students think about her situation? What are her choices? Do they have any advice? Do the boys think Roger is being unreasonable? Is he being honest with her? Does the writer have any positive feelings about what might happen between them, or is she just caving in, doing something she knows she’ll regret?

• If she’s thinking about the consequences, why isn’t she doing anything about birth control or protection against STDs? What do they think will happen?
